My uncle (my mother’s elder brother) was a little bit slow-minded since childhood, so he never married. In his 30s, my grandma adopted a girl to be my uncle’s daughter. Few years ago, my grandma passed away and the adopted cousin got married, which left my uncle the only person living in his house. In the first two years after his daughter was married, my uncle came visit us quite often, and he seemed very lonely.
Years ago, my uncle didn’t visit us for quite a long time which made my mother worry about him, so she went to his home to check on. To her surprise, my mother found that it was quite bustling at my uncle’s house: 5 or 6 women in their 50s were doing housework for my uncle. Some of them were cooking, while others were doing laundry or cleaning the house. My mother was confused about what happened, and she asked my uncle what on earth was going on. My uncle explained that he was so lonely and boring all by himself that he started to believe in “Almighty God” after being introduced and that all women in his house were his “sisters” of the “God’s family” who were quite nice to him and cared about him. He also added that the “God” he believed in was the true God that could not only put believers under protection but also bring about fortunes to their family members. Therefore, he tried to persuade my mother into believing in “Almighty God”. My mother said she was too busy to spare any time to believe any “God”. And she cautiously warned my uncle not to let others con him out of all his daughter’s dowry which was more than 80,000 Yuan. After saying that, my mother left and went back home.
Later, we couldn’t get in touch with my uncle for a long time. He wouldn’t answer phone calls and he was always absent from home when we paid him visits, which got my mother really worry about him. One night after dinner, my parents went to visit my uncle. From afar they saw lights in my uncle’s house were on. Through the crack between the door and its frame, my father saw that my uncle and 5 or 6 women all knelt down on the floor with their eyes narrowing, murmuring something unrecognizable. My parents kept knocking on the door for several times. Then my uncle reluctantly opened the door, asking my parents why they were there at that hour of night. My parents explained that they worried about him since he hadn’t showed up for a while. My uncle said he didn’t want to be disturbed by others in the future. He said he had found the true “God” and therefore he was blessed by “God” and accompanied by brothers and sisters from the “God’s family”. My uncle continued to say that it was the best time he’d ever had in his past 50 or 60 years. My uncle even joined up with those women, try to persuade my parents into believing in “Almighty God”, claiming that in the coming doomsday, the earth and living creatures on it were all doomed to be destroyed, and that only those who believed in “Almighty God” could be blessed from disasters and granted eternal lives. Seeing that my parent didn’t buy those nonsense at all, my uncle sullenly said that since you didn’t believe in “Almighty God”, then we were not brother or sisters anymore, and you were not welcome to my home in the future.
My parents thought my uncle was too ridiculous and unreasonable at that time, so they called my cousin and explained the recent status of my uncle to her. My cousin remorsefully said that since her two kids were too young, she didn’t spend enough time to care about her dad the last few years. And she promised to visit my uncle and talk to him. However, my cousin couldn’t get in touch with my uncle for several days in a row and became quite anxious about him. So, we went to my uncle’s again, only to find that my uncle had gone for days and he took his ID card, bank cards, and clothes along with him. It turned out that my uncle had run away from home.
About more than half a year later, one afternoon, one lad from the same village where my uncle lived told my mother that he saw my uncle limping in a town in the neighboring county and picking up garbage. He called out to my uncle but was ignored. My mother was astonished to hear the news and then went right away with the lad to the neighboring county to look for my uncle. After getting there by car, my mother had to spend more than half an hour before she could finally find my uncle.
Viewing that my uncle was very sick, as thin as a lath, and went lame, my mother cried bitterly. We brought my uncle back home, but he was reluctant to say what had happened in the beginning. My cousin knelt down on her knees before him, and said in tears that she would keep kneeling down there if he kept refusing to tell us what he had gone through. After seeing that my cousin was crying so sadly, my uncle decided to tell us his experience in the past few months.
He said that he first with another three women went to a family in the neighboring county who were also “Almighty God” followers. Every day, all of them went out to spread “Gospels” to draw people in during the day, and they always sing “God’s songs” and dance “God’s dances” after dinner, and then went to bed after saying prayers on their knees at night. Since they called themselves sisters and brothers, they all slept on the floor in the same room. In those days, my uncle thought he was having a meaningful and happy life. My uncle thought that as a man he had the responsibility to do grocery shopping and cover all daily household expenses, so he voluntarily took care of not only expenditures mentioned above but also traffic fees and weekly tributes for “Almighty God”. In this way, my uncle spent all his money in just 6 or 7 months. Later, those women went away one by one and never came back, leaving my uncle penniless and alone in that unfamiliar place. Therefore, my uncle had to make a living as a garbage collector. One day, my uncle stumbled and then fell down, leaving him a painful swollen calf. Because my uncle already had no money for medical treatment, he had to grit his teeth and brave the pain in the room, all alone. After resting for just 2 days, my uncle had to dragged his injured leg outside to collect garbage or he would stay hungry. About 20 days after his injury, the landlord of the house came to collect the rent. Only then did my uncle know that the house he lived in was a rented one. Because of having no money for the rent, my uncle was kick out of the house. Then, he collected garbage during the day and slept under the bridge at night, which was how he ended up like this.
After hearing my uncle’s experience, my mother and cousin cried quite bitterly, and everybody on the spot all hated the evil cult to guts. Fortunately, my uncle fully came to his sense after that and declared he would never believe in the “Almighty God” again. And my cousin said she would show more love and concern for my uncle and pay him visits more frequently than ever to prevent him from feeling lonely.
